Introduction
In my work as a FinOps Trainer, I interact with various organizations, from large to small. A recurring theme is the tension between complete control and autonomous freedom regarding cloud usage. Often, organizations choose “very” limited freedom and control, simply because they are used to it. However, this is a problem. The variability of the cloud is not being fully utilized, which hinders the organization’s innovative power. The FinOps principle “take full advantage of the variable cost model of the Cloud” emphasizes the importance of flexibility and adaptability.
The Power of Starting Small
Let’s draw inspiration from “The Unicorn Project.” In this book, a small team starts working on solving IT problems within the organization, without permission, using limited resources but with passion. After facing many objections and resistance from the established order, they succeed in changing the culture. This could also be applied to FinOps: Engineers, business, and finance are given the opportunity to prove that they can take responsibility. This results in optimal business value from the cloud for the organization, with minimal waste.
Benefits of an Innovative Cloud Culture
• Faster Experimentation and Innovation: By giving teams the freedom to experiment with new technologies and services, the organization can innovate faster and seize new opportunities.
• Improved Cost Control: The variability of the cloud makes it possible to optimize costs. By using flexible resources and pay-as-you-go models, the organization only pays for what it actually uses.
• Increased Motivation and Engagement: Teams that are responsible for their own cloud usage are more motivated and engaged. This leads to better results and higher productivity.
The Path to an Innovative Cloud Culture
The transition to an innovative cloud culture requires a change in mindset. Organizations must dare to let go and give teams the freedom to experiment. This can be a challenge, but the benefits are enormous.
Here are some tips to get started:
• Start small: Begin with a pilot project with a small team. Let this team experience the benefits of the cloud and prove that they can take responsibility.
• Create a culture of learning and experimentation: Encourage teams to learn from their mistakes and experiment with new technologies.
• Invest in training and education: Ensure that employees have the skills and knowledge they need to make the most of the cloud.
Conclusion
The cloud offers organizations a unique opportunity to innovate and transform. By embracing the variability of the cloud, organizations can strengthen their competitive position and be prepared for the future.
The future belongs to organizations that dare to think and act from an innovative mindset.
Additional Thoughts:
• It is important to realize that the cloud is not only a technological solution but also an organizational change.
• The transition to an innovative cloud culture is a process that takes time and effort.
• It is important to create support within the organization for the change.
• The benefits of an innovative cloud culture are great, but there are also risks. It is important to identify and manage these risks.
