Employee in the spotlight: Andrew Ng

At TechNative, we believe in giving tech loving organizations control over their platform. Our Cloud engineer colleague Andrew Ng is a prime example of this. Andrew is one of our first Cloud engineers and played a big role in creating our fully serverless observability module, where we help our customers understand how their platform is behaving. Furthermore, Andrew is part of the AWS WAR team which executes AWS Well Architected reviews. Other than that, he helps several customers on a daily basis in better understanding and maintaining their AWS platform.

What do you like about working for TechNative?

There are several aspects that contribute to my overall enjoyment of working as a Cloud engineer at TechNative.

I appreciate the emphasis on professional development and growth that TechNative has provided. I was able to enhance AWS skills, achieving the Solutions Architect Professional and DevOps professional certificates, as well as constantly being able to take on new challenges within the projects I work on.

Another thing I appreciate about working at TechNative is the organic growth of knowledge sharing between colleagues. We all have our field of interests ranging from new cloud technologies to deep learning concepts and sharing information about these interests, allowing me to stay updated and spark new interests.

Can you share a funny story or anecdote about something that happened in the workplace?

In the beginning of my TechNative tenure, when I was a much more junior engineer, I was tasked with deploying a CloudFormation template in a test environment. CloudFormation templates are infrastructure defined in code in which you use to deploy resources programmatically in the AWS public cloud.

When I went to review the resources in the GUI I could not find them anywhere even though I was certain the resources in the template were deployed, one check from a senior engineer, and it turns out my GUI was set to the wrong region. After changing the region, I found all my deployed resources waiting for me, and I was from then on known for quite some time as the ‘wrong region guy’.

What achievement are you most proud of and why?

When I look back at where I began in TechNative and where I am now, I am very proud of the growth that I am making as an engineer every day. A huge part of this growth is due to the support and opportunities that I receive from TechNative.

What is your favorite office tradition and why?

My favorite tradition in the office is when you achieve a certificate, you also bring something delicious to the office to celebrate your new achievement. This tradition has made plenty of colleagues addicted to my mother’s delicious spring rolls (loempias)!

Another fun office tradition is being able to go to CrossFit with my colleagues every other week. I really find it helps with building team morale, lowers stress and provides overall positive support to each other.
